Type In The Round

Type In The Round

Type In The Round is a typographic design challenge where participants are categorized into four different groups, graphic designers, marketing representatives, 2D artists, and 3D artists. They are asked to work together to create a new visual element to live in a new park.

My responsibility was to work with a peer to brand and design the website and marketing materials for this design challenge. The event focused on typography on multiple surfaces, ranging from packages to sculptures to digital media.

This brand emphasizes typography in both a 2D and 3D space to force creative folks to think “outside of the page.” The challenge encouraged designers and artists to see their own work from a different perspective, and push typography to extreme legibility and illegibility.

Our Process

  • Geometric drawing of an outline square with sections divided by vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines.

    Research Conference

Unlike most design conferences, Type In The Round was focused specifically on pushing the boundaries of typography in both a 2D and 3D space.

  • Geometric drawing of an outline square with sections divided by vertical, horizontal, and half circle lines.

    Collaborate with a Peer

Type In The Round was one of my first collaborative projects.

Collaboration with my peer was extremely valuable. My partner and I worked very well together, regardless of our individual design styles.

    Experimentation and Play

This project emphasized how important it is to experiment with different tools and techniques. Not every design needs to be built using your standard, run of the mill, sans-serif font family and your name tags can hold mysterious abilities only to be discovered by playing with it.

    Push Boundaries

The whole concept of the Type In The Round conference was to push the boundaries of legibility and expectations.

The brand needed to reflect as such. Not only did we push boundaries with creating the brand, but we also pushed the boundaries of the technology used at the time the digital media was built.
